Jason Brubaker: I’ve been working as a professional artist for about 17 years now. I’ve worked in storyboards for commercials, movies and music videos. Worked in traditional animation for commercials, art directed, directed and produced animation. Now I work at Dreamworks Animation in Visual Development currently on Kung Fu Panda franchise. On the side, however, I write and draw my own graphic novel called reMIND. The second volume just came out this April.

 MLoveizM: How did you start the Remind Journey?

 Jason Brubaker: It started a long time ago when I wanted to learn how to animate. I just dove in and created my own characters, started animating and seven years later I had about 15 minutes finished. It was at that point that I decided to change it into a graphic novel so that I could actually complete the story one day. I started a publishing company in my garage and spent another 7 years to finish the story of reMIND. Now that it’s finally finished I am itching to start on my next book.

MLoveizM: What are you trying to say and get across to your readers and any new fans with the book?

 Jason Brubaker: At its core, I really wanted to give people a warning that before you just drop everything and accept something as truth or fact, you really need to make sure that it’s worthy of your faith. Make sure that it really IS the truth. In the case of reMIND, Victuals was battling with what to put his faith in – The Invisible or the King’s Idol called Nahusthan which he brainwashed the Kingdom into worshiping. I think society today will accept ANYTHING as fact if someone popular claims it to be true on YouTube, a blog or even the news. I wanted to reMIND people that they need to really do their own research on things pertaining to deep belief subjects like God, religion and unquestioned traditions instead of just taking some controversial new authors word for it. Life is too valuable to waste on false idols.

MLoveizM: Can you explain a little bit of the process in making your pages?

 Jason Brubaker: I love working in traditional media when I’m drawing the panels. I sketch it all out in small thumbnails on paper. Then I enlarge the thumbnails and trace them with tracing paper and then enlarge the panels again for the final cleanup with a lightbox and mechanical pencils. I generally don’t ink anything. For coloring I scan color textures made with acrylic paints and use them to composite in Photoshop to get my final look.

MLoveizM: What can you tell young artist trying to get their foot in the door?

 Jason Brubaker: I think the most important thing is to love what you are doing and do it with all your heart. If you don’t love what you are doing and believe in it’s purpose then you will not put in the time to master it. You will always face challenges that will make you want to give up or say it’s not worth it but because you love it so much and believe in it so much, you will overcome the odds and force yourself to push through and actually give yourself a chance to create something special.

We didn’t make the finalists but we sure did gain encouragement and drive to continue to love our community no matter what!

South Central Los Angeles, known for it’s notorious mentions in rap songs, seedy motels and abandoned houses, gang wars and riots, has a population of sickness and disease, violence, drug and human trafficking and it all starts with a corrupted mindset.  MLoveizm stands as a beacon of light to reach those who feel suppressed, stifled and limited in their community through the medium of art.  Art transcends demographics through a deep seeded sense of relatability in life experiences, thought processes that strikes a nerve to take action.   Our first big goal is to facilitate a creative environment where Artists can learn through internships, business development/entrepreneurship, workshops, artist showcases, and jobs through future publications like MLoveizm magazine, upcoming book projects, film documentaries, art inspiration field trips and more for local Artists as well as those who travel to South Central to grow and learn.  The jobs would be mainly artistic such as filming, photographing, editing, lighting, writing, painting, fabricating, designing, styling, researching and more.  We would also like to facilitate business minded individuals that understand and appreciate the arts as the oil to our engine and further teach in our workshops as well. We take a deep interest in character building emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually.  Our hopes is to meet the Artist where they are at in their life and cultivate the greatness within through collaboration, education, practical skill and business building.  We want the Artist to exude confidence just as much as their work does. From starting off as Artists, growing as entrepreneurs and innovators we know what it is like to gain ground on making dreams become reality and bringing up as many Artists and art supporters as possible in the process.

Hera

We all have a fantasy world that we live in sometimes. The really mysterious world we wish to have, or what we see as perfection. Tom Bagshaw’s artwork explores themes of fantasy, beauty, and mysticism, which are captured through digital painting. The realism and imaginative content bump heads, but also compliment his work, which makes it a Tom Bragshaw piece. Since beauty is apart of his themes, femininity plays a big role showing strong women and not a damsel in distress.  The mystery in them capture the full them, and allows you to want to know the story.

Host

Bragshaw not only works with digital painting, but commercial illustration as well. His talents are wanted from high fashion to GQ to Sony, all wanting a piece of his work. His work has been shown in galleries from Los Angeles to the U.K. The stretch of his artwork displays pure beauty, with a little mysterious twist.

Virgin and Child

Nostalgic behavior isn’t rare within Mark Ryden’s artwork. Creating pieces that reveal such dynamics of “Pop Surrealism” and loading his work with culture connotation. His style ranges from cryptic yet cute, giving the viewer children who subject to innocence and mysteriousness. The beautiful paintings hint at a dark side, giving it a psychic twist with little girls. Breaking thin lines and barely crossing boundaries with his artwork, he has continued to cause attention to his audience creating such a peculiar style for himself.

The Piano Player

Los Angeles Native, Ryden graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, with a BFA in 1987. His artwork has then been displayed in Seattle and Los Angeles. His work reflects what he said about his Wondertoonel collection, “I believe in letting imagination thrive in my art. I am not afraid of nostalgia or sentiment. I value to taking the time to make a painting “beautiful.” I want to breath life into my paintings.

Wreath

Subjective interpretation of her art is the goal of Amy Sol. She wants her audience to catch the theme and message through her eyes, and there own as well. In her pieces there is a mix of unique colors, whimsical landscapes, exotic plants, and some type of character. The artwork displayed is influenced by manga, folk-art, some works of illustration, and modern design. Sol was and still is a self taught artist, strictly focusing on her pieces from beginning to end.  Integrating both narrative and figurative styles her artwork captures a mystery as well. With the final products the characters expressions reflect peace and companionship, which is what you should feel as you view them.

Korean bred and Las Vegas native, Amy Sol’s artwork describes internal peace and subjective awareness of self. Within each of her piece sets a form of life being present is what keeps you involved in her art. The presence of something looking alive gravitates you towards her pieces, wanting more or finding out the message behind the piece. Particularly in “Wreath”, the work shows the connection with animals and how humans interact with them. From a peaceful place, it could remind you of the circle of life.

Quiescent Light

Amy Sol’s artwork is created with wood panel, acrylic, watercolor, and/or pencil. Each piece is created differently and has a different meaning. She describes her way of working, “When I paint on the wood it influences the colors I use. It reminds me to keep things really natural.” Sol’s artwork represents peace, what do you feel?

Transcendence

Life exists underwater for the California artist, Erika Craig. Immersing herself into her work, by applying her subjects underwater and having them become familiar by their surroundings. The symbolism behind her photos is the reflection of self and the constant change within someone, which is why she has a distorted reflection in the water. Her images evolve with color, shape, and the breakdown of the depicted emotion immersed from subject in the painting.

Passage

Erika uses water in her work to represent the source of life, body, and spiritual renewal. She describes water as being, “the place of origin and a place inside ourselves where we go to find peace.” Within her art she connects the world, mind, and body, along with our subconscious thoughts. Allowing you to enter her work, and finding your own personal perception of reality and the complexity of our world. In her work you will find yourself captivated by not only the reflections but also the interpretation and meaning behind the work, forgetting struggle and realizing meaning of your life.
