“Cally is a photographic artist from New Zealand with romantic notions of finding value in banality. Her work identifies aesthetic value where none appears apparent and invites viewers to reflect on our rural beginnings. After graduating in photography in the early 90’s she went on to show and sell her work, which led to a number of awards. She worked

Dorking
in the industry until having a family in early 2000. Her particular interest has always been in the fine art genre and recently this is where she has come back to. ‘I look for aesthetic value in unpromising subjects in order to create a change in perception of the mundane and overlooked. I am always conscious of seeing things as they could be rather
than as they actually are. My goal to create a new (or old) perception that is accessible to everyone, so that for a moment we see things in a similar way. I began taking photos when I was 11 after begging for a camera. My Father is an artist and we often visited forests, farms and coastal areas that had amazing trees and scenery for him to sketch. I didn’t feel I could draw but I still wanted to capture all those things that I had seen. My first roll of film was of trees, birds, landscapes and livestock. I went on to study

Gotland
photography at school and tertiary level. My particular interests were landscapes and fine art photography. I also loved photographing people and went on to make a career out of that. Since moving to the country 15 years ago, I have been quite taken with my environment, so aside from photographing my family I have returned to the kinds of subjects that first
interested me as a child.’” -Cally Whitham
